SEPTIMANAE
LATINAE EUROPAEAE
(THE EUROPEAN LATIN WEEKS)
LATIN AS AN INTERNATIONAL
LANGUAGE
The main goal of our EUROPEAN
LATIN WEEKS is to bring together all friends of
the Latin language to speak Latin and thereby to
experience what an exciting and inspiring experience that
can be. The Latin Weeks are particularly directed towards
young people as we are convinced that Latin is not just
the language of science but also a practical means of
international communication even in modern everyday life.
We therefore invite pupils, students, teachers and all
friends of Latin from all over the world.
In the course of the week, you can speak Latin and make
friends with people from other countries. You'll find
that Latin can be of practical use, which you can
experience in games, entertainment, and other xx
activities. We intend to prove that Latin is not only the
language of science but also a means of communication in
daily life, and we hope to open up a new approach to
Roman and European culture.
Nearly every year we are able to give special grants to
2-3 pupils or students who are unable to pay for travel
and the Latin Week themselves and who would otherwise not
be able to participate. Especially if you are from
Eastern Europe and interested in such a grant, please let
us know and we will see what we can do for you.
Each AMÖNEBURG LATIN WEEK
includes a basic course in spoken Latin and various group
activities such as Roman cooking, theatre, music, an
excursion, etc. In the course of the week, you will have
plenty of opportunities to speak Latin and make friends
with people from other countries.
Our textbook PIPER
SALVE came into beeing during the first ten years
of the EUROPEAN LATIN WEEKS.

THE JOHANNES-HAUS
During the Amöneburg Latin Weeks most of the
participants stay in the Johannes-Haus, where the Roman
cooking and a majority of the activities also take place.
The Johannes-Haus offers bed and full board with 3 meals
a day. Participants are usually lodged in double rooms,
as very few single rooms are available.
|
|
Where can the sound of Latin be
heard better then in theatre? Our Theatre Group
reconstitutes itself in every Latin Week.

 |
Roman cookery was one of our main
interests from the beginning. The combination of eating
and speaking like our Roman ancestors gives us a much
completer overview and a better understanding of Roman
life than the pure reading of Latin texts would.
The recipe book we use is the Latin-German
Apicius edition edited by Robert Maier - one of the
founders of the Amöneburg Latin Weeks - and published by
Reclam in 1991.
|
|
Music plays an important role in all
our Amöneburg Latin Weeks. Our Concert Group was
established some years ago when we got together a group
of young people who had brought their instruments with
them to one of the first Latin Weeks. We began to
organize a final concert which then became one of the
central elements in our Latin Weeks. In the meantime our
orchestra sometimes involves up to 20 players and
singers.

 |
During every Amöneburg Latin
Week there is a one day excursion to one of the major
monuments or cities around Amöneburg.
In previous years we have visited Marburg, Kassel,
Fritzlar and Fulda. Of course we also visit the important
monuments of Amöneburg
itself.
|
THE LATIN WEEK PARTICIPANTS
are of all ages and of different cultural and
professional backgrounds. You will find young pupils,
students, teachers, hobby Latinists and University
professors, Latin poets and musicians from various
countries.
